Venerable Master Shinran – Video

Having lived through a life of tortuous trials and tribulations, both as a monk as well as a householder– one in which he was finally awakened by the Light of the Buddha’s Boundless Compassion – the Venerable Master had displayed to us that, even hopeless ordinary persons filled with blind passions can be saved.

He was therefore, profoundly grateful to the Buddhas and the seven Pure Land Masters for their compassion and heart-felt benevolence in transmitting the precious teaching of Faith and Nembutsu to him.

His fervent wish was that others would also listen deeply to this precious Pure Land Dharma, pristinely passed down from Shakyamuni Buddha through the ages and quickly receive Amida Buddha’s gift of Salvation…

Stage of Truly Settled – Video

Stage of the Truly Settled (正 定 聚, Jap: Sho-Jo-Ju) – which Mahasattva Nagarjuna called ‘Stage of the Definitely Settled’ – is the stage realized by that group of persons whose birth in the fulfilled Pure Land of Amida is absolutely assured.

Having single-heartedly entrusted themselves to Amida Buddha and The Primal Vow, they have taken the easy and direct route out of samsara – the end of all pain and suffering – and they know, without any doubt, that they will become Buddhas in the Pure Land, when their physical lives end…

Benefits of Nembutsu 念 佛 – Video

Saying The Buddha’s Name (Namo Amida Butsu, 南 无 阿 彌 陀 佛) is the Great Practice contained in Amida Buddha’s Primal Vow, His Promise to save all suffering beings. It is the Right Act, and Infinite virtue directed to us by the Buddha for our going forth to The Pure Land. The Nembutsu, had been selected by Amida Buddha and given to all ordinary foolish persons (凡 夫 – bombu), like ourselves, as an Easy Path to Enlightenment. It is a practical channel by which our minds can be effectively tuned to, so that we can accept the infinite virtues, given to us, for our assured birth in Sukhavati, the Land of Peace and Happiness.

As the Nembutsu (念 佛) comes from Amida Buddha’s Vow-mind, it breaks through the ignorance of all sentient beings and fulfils all their aspirations. It actualizes the Buddha’s compassionate practice of benefiting miserable beings like us. Therefore, Saying Amida Buddha’s Name, is definitely not our practice or good act, that we perform, in our endless struggle, to attain enlightenment, through our own self-power effort.

The Great Compassion of Amida Buddha is inconceivable, and the merits that He transfers to us through the Nembutsu, are also inconceivable. He constantly protects those who recite His Name, day and night, blessing them with safety and peace, as well as protecting them from harm.

Persons who say the Buddha’s Name, no matter whether they believe in it or not, always create an affinity with Amida Buddha, that would enable them to fully entrust in The Primal Vow in the future. Moreover, unseen powers, heavenly beings and powerful spirits, revere and constantly protect persons of Nembutsu, day and night.

Ajatasatru: Our Painful Story – Video

‘Icchantikas’ ((一 闡 提), is a Sanskrit word used to describe miserable, hopeless persons, like ourselves, who lack the seed of Salvation. Every ordinary foolish person today is badly stricken with this common human sickness of the Icchantika, that is the most difficult to cure in this world. Only the Compassionate Light of a Supreme Buddha can cure us and lead us out of samsara, the vicious cycle of birth and death.

Concerning beings who are difficult to cure, the Buddha has taught the following in The Nirvana Sutra:
“Kasyapa, there are three kinds of people in the world who are hard to cure:
.. those who slander the Great Vehicle,
.. those who commit the five grave offenses, and
.. those who lack the seed of Buddhahood (icchantikas).
These three sicknesses are the most severe in the world; they cannot be treated by sravakas, pratyekabuddhas, or bodhisattvas.”

True Buddha and Land – Video

Bodhisattva Dharmakara made the relevant Vows that established the true Pure Land of Peace and Bliss – the Vows of Immeasurable Light and Life – when He became Amida Buddha ten kalpas ago, through the fulfillment of all His compassionate Vows…

“Reverently contemplating the True Buddha and Land
I realized that the Buddha is the Tathagata of Inconceivable Light
And that the Land also is the Land of Immeasurable Light
Because they have naturally arisen
Through the fulfilment of Vows of Great Compassion
They are called True Fulfilled Buddha and Land.”

Thus, Master Shinran clearly tells us that Amida Buddha is a True and Real Buddha and that the Pure Land is a True and Real Buddha Land. From the natural perspective of all unenlightened human beings like ourselves, these are the historical facts related to us by Shakyamuni Buddha who appeared in India about 2600 years ago. We should therefore, trust the true words of the Buddha and must never say that Amida Buddha is a myth and that the Pure Land is only in the mind. It is truly sad that so many, so-called followers of Jodo Shinshu today, particularly scholars, have opined such slanderous, wrong views, by blatantly misinterpreting the Buddha’s words, with their defiled human minds of absolute delusion.

Dharma Ending Age – Video

末 法 時 代

In his wonderful exposition on The Pure Land Way, Master Shinran, quoting from the writings of Master Tao Cho of China earnestly wrote….

“Further, The Great Collection Sutra states:
In the Dharma Ending Age
Out of billions of sentient beings practicing to cultivate the Way
Not one will attain Enlightenment.
We are now in The Dharma Ending Age
It is the evil world of the five defilements
The Pure Land Gate is the one and only path that affords passage.”

This is indeed an extremely bold statement regarding The Dharma Ending Age in which we now live. Yet, it is absolutely true, when we would honestly look into ourselves and see the pitiful states we are painfully trapped in – our real natures, puny spiritual aptitudes and the extremely adverse living environments we have to face every day.

Hindrance of Doubt – video

疑 情 是 障 礙

In his Shoshinge – Gatha of True Faith (正 信 偈), Master Shinran clearly tells us that the Hindrance of Doubt persistently obscures our path to The Pure Land of Peace and Ultimate Happiness…

“Our continued return to this cyclic home of birth and death
Is certainly due to the hindrance of doubt
Swift entrance into the peaceful, uncreated Realm of Bliss
Is necessarily brought about by Shinjin.”

Hindrance of Doubt is the main fetter that keeps us strongly imprisoned inside the dreadful realms of samsara – the vicious cycle of birth, suffering and death marked by impermanence, relentless pain and suffering. We have transmigrated endlessly within the six realms – gods, demi-gods, humans, animals, hungry spirits and hell-beings – without an effective condition that could put an end to this treacherous cycle of painful existence.
